I wasn't sure how much I'd like this movie, and early on I thought it was just okay. But as it progressed, I came to like it more and more, eventually getting to the point of saying I kinda loved it. I thought it was really funny, including skewering of various tropes. And some of the humor was even a bit risqué. And overall, it's a pretty good story, with good characters, and an ending that could have been tragic, but tragedy was believably avoided, allowing for a happy ending.
Krypto the super dog (voiced by Dwayne Johnson) has been best friends with Superman/Clark Kent (John Krasinski) since he was a puppy. But when Clark starts spending more time with Lois Lane (Olivia Wilde), Krypto gets jealous. This prompts Clark to go to an animal shelter, to adopt a new friend for Krypto. He doesn't end up adopting any pet, but we do get to know some of the pets in the shelter. There's a dog named Ace (Kevin Hart), who wants to escape; a pig who idolizes super heroes, named PB (Vanessa Bayer); a nearsighted turtle named Merton (Natasha Lyonne); a nervous squirrel named Chip (Diego Luna); and a hairless guinea pig named Lulu (Kate McKinnon).
Later, Superman and Krypto foil a plan of Lex Luthor's to bring a meteor made of orange kryptonite to Earth, to give himself super powers. However, Lulu, who had been a test animal at LexCorp, and considers Lex her friend and mentor, manages to obtain a shard of kryptonite, herself. This gives her the power of telekinesis, and also gives powers to the other animals in the shelter: Ace becomes strong and invulnerable, PB can change size, Merton gains super speed, and Chip can shoot electricity from his fingers. Lulu leaves to enact her evil plan to abduct Superman and the rest of the Justice League, and free Lex from prison. She also leaves a piece of cheese for Krypto to eat, which contains a piece of green kryptonite. When Krypto loses his powers, he recruits the other animals from the shelter to help him rescue Superman and the others. Lulu recruits a group of guinea pigs, on whom she bestows various super powers with her orange kryptonite.
And I guess I don't want to spoil any more of the plot. Except to mention that Ace has a tragic backstory that I found moving. And of course there are some exciting battles. There's also a mid-credits scene and a post-credits scene. Anyway, it's a super fun movie. And it has a great cast. A few of the voices I haven't already mentioned include Keanu Reeves as Batman, Jameela Jamil as Wonder Woman, Daveed Diggs as Cyborg, Keith David as Dog-El, Maya Erskine as Mercy Graves, Yvette Nicole Brown as the shelter owner, Alfred Molina as Jor-El, Lena Headey as Lara, and many others who aren't familiar to me.
