So there's this guy named Magnifico (Chris Pine) who experienced some tragedy at some point in his life, and he decided not to let that happen to anyone else. So, he studied magic until he became a powerful sorcerer, and then he and his wife Amaya built a castle or whatever, on an island. People began coming from all over for his help, and they settled there, building up the city of Rosas, where Magifico and Amaya became king and queen. Now, people give their deepest wishes to Magnifico for safekeeping, and once in a while he grants someone's wish. But people can't remember their wishes after giving them to Magnifico, so they can't work toward fulfilling their wishes themselves. Meanwhile, a 17-year-old girl named Asha has an interview with Magnifico, hoping to become his apprentice. She also hopes Magnifico will grant the wish of her 100-year old grandfather, Sabino (Victor Garber). The interview does not go particularly well, and Asha comes to realize it's wrong for the king to keep everyone's wishes, which don't really belong to him. So that night, she wishes on a star for something better for everyone than the current system. A small star comes down and, while it can't talk, it does make plants and animals talk, including Asha's baby goat, Valentino (Alan Tudyk). And Asha wants to get Star's help to release all the wishes stored in the castle. She also gets help from seven friends, the main one being Dahlia. (Her friends were all inspired by dwarfs from Snow White, but I thought it was only really obvious with maybe two or three of them.) My favorite one of her friends is probably Bazeema, an introvert who's really good at going unnoticed, seeming to appear and disappear at will. Anyway, I don't want to spoil too many details of the plot, but Magnifico becomes increasingly desperate to retain the wishes, and to do so uses a book of dark magic that he had locked away, and is basically taken over by the darkness, becoming truly evil. And there were definitely times I wondered if it might be possible that he'd win in the end, and the story would have a tragic ending. Spoiler alert: it didn't.

I guess that's all I want to say about the plot. I'm leaving out some relatively important details, but I think I've provided enough of an idea of what the story's all about. I must say, I thought people giving up their wishes was a bad idea even before Asha realized it. And I thought Magnifico was kind of sus even when he wasn't evil, and acted friendly. I also need to say that it took me awhile to get into the story. At first I didn't really like it, but as the movie went on my opinion of it improved a bit. It's still not nearly as good as most Disney movies, but it definitely had some good parts. I didn't care too much for most of the songs, as the lyrics didn't exactly seem all that lyrical to me. But there were probably a couple that were okay, and they were all sung well enough, even if I didn't think they flowed all that well. And... I guess that's all I want to say.
