This came out in 2015, but I didn't see it until 2024. I think it was direct-to-video, but I'm not really positive. It's got a 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with very few reviews, but I kinda liked it. (Emphasis on the "kinda".) It's definitely not a good movie, but I honestly don't think it's bad, either. In fact I think it's good enough that I can't just rate it "meh", as I do with some movies.
Anyway, it starts with a guy named Max Burwood (who has recently started going by the name "Magnus") narrating an entry he's writing in a journal. We later learn that he was a recovering addict, who was now into Viking stuff after a stint at a rehab facility, where he met his girlfriend, who recently died of an overdose. In his journal, it really sounds like he's going to kill himself, but then he doesn't. He just leaves his house with a sword.
In the next scene, we meet a young woman named Johana Burwood (Sarah Hyland), who is Magnus's sister. She comes home from work and turns on the TV, where she sees a news story about a meth dealer whom Magnus had attacked and been killed by. While she's trying to cope with the news of her brother's death, a guy named Peter shows up at her door, for a date. (I don't think they've known each other very long, and I don't think they're really in a relationship yet.) When he finds out about Johana's brother, he insists on going with her to her family's home for the funeral.
The family turns out to be pretty dysfunctional. I'm not sure how long ago Johana's mother died, but apparently her father had become distant after that. (And it seems like maybe he wasn't a great father even before that.) Also, her father now has a live-in "nurse" named Faye, who is very into new age stuff. Already arrived is Johana's brother, Barry (Bret Harrison, whom I knew from Reaper, though I couldn't remember where I knew him from until I checked online), and his boyfriend, Makewi. Soon after that, Johana's other brother, Don, arrives with his 15-year-old daughter, Ashley. There's lots of squabbling about various issues from the past and present. There's just a lot of personal drama. But ultimately the siblings come together for reasons I don't want to spoil. And... I don't know what else to say.
