Antboy: Revenge of the Red Fury (PG)

This is the first sequel to Antboy. It came out in 2014, but I didn't see it until 2021, by which time I didn't remember much about the first movie. And I couldn't really say which movie I liked better, if either. But I'm giving them both the same rating, which I think is generous for both movies.

Pelle wants to ask Ida out, but he's too nervous to do so. Meanwhile, a new student named Christian moves in on her. As for Antboy, he has trouble on two fronts: a pair of bullies who get bitten by a stag beetle and gain super powers of their own and call themselves the Terror Twins, and a girl named Maria, who wants revenge against Antboy. Why? Because she asked him to come to a school party, and he said he would. But instead of showing up as Antboy, he came to the party as Pelle, wanting to stop Christian from getting closer to Ida. Later, Maria uses an invisibility suit invented by her father, to torment Antboy/Pelle (whose secret identity she learns while invisible). She visits the Flea in prison to ask for his help, and he tells her to team up with the bullies, and how to drain Antboy of his super powers. Oh, and I guess Antboy and Wilhelm refer to their unseen foe as a "fury", but I don't think she's actually called "the Red Fury" until the end of the film, at which point she becomes a superhero.

Anyway, if it seems like Maria turned into a villain with too little provocation, she later forgives Antboy just as easily. Just like the first film, it's all rather silly, but kind of fun to watch ironically, or whatever.

Followed by Antboy 3.
