This came out in 2003, but I didn't see it until 2024. It's loosely based on the graphic novel of the same name. By the time I saw this, it had been about 10 years since I read volume 1 of the comics, and I didn't remember many details about it. (As of yet, I still haven't read any further volumes, though I definitely want to.) But I can say this movie diverges quite a bit from the comics. It did poorly with critics, but I liked it, though not as much as I did the comics. I think if you're a fan of the comics who is looking for a proper adaptation, you may not like it much at all, but if you're just looking for an interesting action movie, it's not bad. It does have its problems, but I found them to be fairly minor. The comics' creators disliked the movie, which I can certainly understand, but my opinion of it differs from theirs.
It's set in 1899. A group posing as Germans use a sort of tank to break into a British bank, and later pose as Brits to kidnap German scientists. Each country blames the other, and imminent war seems likely. The British government sends a man named Reed to Kenya, to recruit legendary adventurer Allan Quatermain to lead a team being assembled by Reed's boss, simply known as "M". The rest of the team includes Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, an invisible thief named Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), Dorian Gray, and Henry Jekyll/Edward Hyde. They're also joined by an American secret service agent named Sawyer, to whom Quatermain takes a role as mentor. It is revealed that the leader of the terrorists is called Fantom, and he apparently plans to attack Venice next, so the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen travel there aboard the Nautilus to stop them.
I guess I don't want to spoil any more details of the plot. But a lot happens, and I consider it all fairly fun. Not as good as the comics upon which it's based, but... fun.
