This is the third movie in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, picking up after the events of Dead Man's Chest. It came out in 2007, but I didn't see it until 2014. Um... hmmm. These movies are always convoluted and hard to follow, with lots of twists and lots of characters and switching allegiances and whatnot. But I kind of feel it doesn't much matter whether you can follow the plot at all, the movies are always fun. And redonkulous. And funny. (Most critics would probably call this the weakest of the three movies, but it's really hard for me to tell the difference, and my own ratings of each film may not be a good gauge of which I like better, because... they're all made up the same elements: action, humor, and utter weirdness.)
So... Jack Sparrow is currently in Davy Jones's Locker, which seems to be a kind of purgatory, in this film. At the end of the last film, Tia Dalma had raised Captain Barbossa from the dead to help rescue Jack. But first he and Elizabeth and Will need to get themselves a ship and crew, so they pay a visit to a pirate captain named Sao Feng (Chow Yun-fat)... who isn't exactly eager to help. But um... Lord Beckett is now in possession of Davy Jones's heart, so he can command him and his ship, the Flying Dutchman, to do his bidding. And they're ridding all the seas of pirates. So, Barbossa wants to call a meeting (or "Brethren Court") of the nine Pirate Lords (which includes himself, Jack, Sao Feng, and several others). They must make a stand against their common enemies, which is a tricky proposition, considering all the pirates hate each other. And Barbossa wants to free a sea goddess named Calypso, whom a previous Brethren Court had sealed in a human body, years ago. Most of the Pirate Lords don't want to do that, because they fear her vengeance, but Barbossa sees it as the only way to stop Davy Jones.
Anyway, they manage to get Jack (and the Black Pearl) out of the Locker, and of course he and Barbossa will spend much of the rest of the movie fighting over which one is the real captain of the Pearl. And everyone fights over what exactly to do about anything. Meanwhile, Will still wants to free his father from his service on the Dutchman. And... I dunno, lots of stuff happens. And there's a fairly lengthy and cool battle between the Pearl and the Dutchman. And... I don't want to spoil how the movie ends, but I will say there's a nice little scene after the end credits. And I look forward to seeing the fourth movie.
