The central character (and narrator) is a 30-year-old Greek-American woman named Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos). She has a very large, and very Greek, family. And um, they mostly seem to think women should just get married and have babies. And Toula hasn't done that yet, so she just works in her family's restaurant. But eventually she decides to go to college, and her mother helps convince her father that this is okay. This leads to her getting a job working for her aunt's travel agency, instead of at the restaurant. Although... there's this guy named Ian Miller (John Corbett), whom she'd first seen when she was working at the restaurant, and immediately her brain just sort of froze, because she was so attracted to him. Later, he notices her working at the travel agency. This is after she's sort of changed her look, and Ian doesn't realize at first that she's the same woman he saw at the restaurant, but he eventually does.
Whatever. They start dating, and he's a really nice guy, and genuinely interested in her and everything that makes her... her. This, of course, includes her family. They are very different from him and his family (but then, Toula has always been rather different from her own family, as well). I'm not sure how typical her family is of Greek-American families, and I can't help feeling there's a certain degree of exaggeration for comedic effect. But on the other hand, Ian's right to say that everyone has a weird family. (I don't really know about his; we only meet his parents, who seem rather non-descriptly WASP-ish.) Anyway, after dating for awhile, Toula and Ian decide to get married. This is somewhat problematic, as their families don't really get each other, and Toula's father is particularly upset that she's not marrying a Greek guy. (Incidentally, there's a very minor subplot about her father's mother living with them, or maybe it's his mother-in-law. I wasn't clear on that point. It definitely seemed like she was his mother, but it also definitely seemed like she considered him an enemy because he was Turkish. But it was super-clear that he was Greek, so maybe his wife was the Turkish one, although he was the one the old woman seemed to have a problem with, so... I just didn't get what the hell all that was about.)
But anyway. I dunno what to say. The movie's all about the humor of culture clashes, and Toula's insecurity, and the conflict of perspectives between her and her father. Still, everything works out fairly well. The main characters are pretty likable, and no one's really unlikable (even if some of them might not be fun to live with). It's basically a funny and feel-good movie.
