A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (R)

A teenager named Kristen Parker (Patricia Arquette) is haunted in her dreams by Freddy Krueger, who forces her to unwittingly slash her wrist with a razor. Her mother then sends her to a psychiatric hospital, where she meets other teens who have been having nightmares about Freddy, as well, though none of them knew who he was. The doctors there, naturally, believe any injuries the patients have suffered were self-inflicted, even suicidal. They don't believe there's any connection between the dreams, despite them all being about the same monstrous man. Luckily for them, a new intern believes them- Nancy Thompson, from the first movie. She eventually gets another doctor named Neil Gordon to believe Freddy is real, and a serious danger to all of his patients. Meanwhile, Neil also occasionally sees a mysterious nun, Sister Mary Helena, who eventually tells him the origin of Freddy Krueger. Not how he died and became what he is now, but how he was born. (As horrific as it was, I couldn't help laughing at just a little, because it's the kind of thing that seems so intensely of a horror movie. The ultimate line about it, I mean, is just not the sort of thing you'd hear anywhere else.) Anyway, she also tells Neil that Freddy's remains must be found and buried on hallowed ground.

So, Nancy goes to her father, the only person who knows where the remains are hidden, and tries to get him to help. He doesn't want to, but Neil forces him to, while Nancy returns to the hospital to help the kids. One thing that's interesting about this movie is that they discover each of the kids has their own unique power within dreams. One of Kristen's powers is to be able to draw people into her dreams, so that they could all work together against Freddy. Unfortunately, he still manages to separate them and take them on one by one. And I'm afraid not everyone survives. But anyway... I don't feel like mentioning all the kids specifically. I do feel like mentioning that there's a friendly orderly named Max who doesn't know anything about what's going on with Freddy. But he's worth mentioning just because he's played by Larry Fishburne. (Yes, I feel uncomfortable not calling him "Laurence," but he's billed here as Larry.) There's also a nurse who gets topless in one of the teenager's dreams, but of course she turns out to actually be Freddy, in the dream. It's weird that Freddy doesn't kill him right away, but does leave him tied up with tongues (because the boy doesn't speak, get it?) over a pit of fire. So he goes into a coma, and Nancy and the other kids eventually go into the dream world to rescue him.

And, well, a lot of other stuff happens, but I don't want to spoil any more of it. Except, Freddy seems to be permanently defeated, in the end, but of course that will only last until the next movie comes along....
