This came out in 2013, but I didn't see it (and its 2015 sequel) until 2017. It's something I stumbled upon on YouTube, though the link I have to it above is different from the one I watched. It was made in two parts, and the Vimeo and YouTube links are to part one, while the video I watched had both parts together (but it wasn't an official link). Anyway... the film is narrated by the main character, a 10-year-old girl named Zoe. She and her baby brother are living with an abusive father, and one day they're taken away, after their father is arrested. Zoe experiences at least a couple of foster homes, and most of the time she is separated from her brother. Their mother would like to get them back, but she may not be allowed to do so. Zoe's current foster mother (who I guess is also a teacher at her school) seems to really care for her, but Zoe isn't making it easy, apparently because of deep psychological scars she's suffered in her past. And because she can't stand being separated from her brother (to whom young Zoe has an almost motherly relationship).

Well. Zoe's narration makes her seem rather wise beyond her years, and almost poetic. But mostly just tragic. I don't really know what else to say. The film is not meant for entertainment purposes, of course, but to educate people about things like the foster care system and child abuse, and whatnot. And I think it does a pretty good job at that. One can't help but develop strong protective feelings toward Zoe, and by extension, all children in similar situations. It's not an easy film to watch, nor should it be. (Though there is ultimately a happy ending.) But I'm glad I stumbled across it.

Edit: Since I watched this, a third part has been made, which I'll need to watch sometime. In fact, I should rewatch the first two parts, and review them individually, before moving on to the third part. (I guess they're sort of considered three separate films.)
