This came out in 2013, but I didn't see it until 2025. It's based on the first book in a series I haven't read. The movie did poorly both critically and financially, and that doesn't especially bother me. I didn't think the movie was good or bad, but I felt reasonably entertained while I was watching it. A planned sequel was cancelled because of this movie's underperformance, which also doesn't bother me, though I expect I would have watched it if it had been made.

So, there's a teenage girl named Clary (Lily Collins), whose mother Jocelyn (Lena Headey) gets kidnapped by a couple of goons working for a former Shadowhunter named Valentine. Shadowhunters kill demons and whatnot, and Jocelyn had been a Shadowhunter. She ran away to hide a Cup from Valentine, and had spent years suppressing Clary's memories so she wouldn't become part of that world. But after Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary meets a Shadowhunter named Jace. The two of them, along with Clary's friend Simon, and a couple other Shadowhunters named Alec and Isabelle, search for both Jocelyn and the Cup. And they eventually get help from a friend of Clary's family, a werewolf named Luke. And a ton of other stuff happens, but I don't care enough to go into any more of the story. Oh, and incidentally, the place called the "City of Bones" plays only a very small role in the movie.
