This is based on a novel by Dean Koontz, which I haven't read. The movie came out in 2013 (2014 in the US), but I don't recall having heard of it until several years later. I finally watched it in 2021, on Hulu. It didn't do very well critically, and did even worse financially. But I liked it. (Note: I originally listed this in my "supernatural & paranormal" section, and when I later created a subpage for supernatural horror movies in that section, I decided to include it there. But I can't remember for sure whether or not I would have called it "horror" when I watched it.)
There's this guy named Odd Thomas (Anton Yelchin), and yes, "Odd" is his real name. He has a girlfriend who goes by the nickname "Stormy". And he can see (but not hear) dead people (among other supernatural abilities), so he uses this gift to help them however he can, I guess. We first see him using his ability to identify the killer of a girl, whom he chases and beats up before turning him over to police chief Porter (Willem Dafoe). He mostly keeps his ability a secret, but at least Stormy and Porter know about it. I'm not sure how many other people might. Anyway, one day he has a dream about a massacre that's going to happen in his small town, so of course he wants to prevent it. His friend Viola (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) also has a dream of herself being one of the victims of the massacre. Oh, and Odd can see (CGI) creatures called bodachs, which are invisible to most people, and will kill anyone they find out can see them. Mostly, though, they just wait for deaths to happen so they can, like, feed on death's energy, or something. (They kind of remind me of the gravelings from Dead Like Me.) And Odd starts seeing more and more bodachs in town, so he knows the massacre is going to involve a lot of deaths.
Um, I guess I don't want to spoil anything about Odd's investigation of the impending massacre, or how it all turns out. But I thought the movie has a mostly good ending. And I liked Odd and Stormy as characters, as well as their relationship. Also, Odd narrates the movie, and sometimes it takes me a few seconds to be sure whether something he's saying in a scene is narration or if he's actually speaking to someone. But I think all the dialog and narration in the movie is kind of a hybrid of cheesy and cool/amusing. And I guess I don't know what else to tell you.
