Nirvana was a grunge band, formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1997, by lead singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain and bassist Krist Novoselic. They've had a number of drummers over the years, perhaps most famously Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990. Nirvana became hugely successful with the release of their second studio album, "Nevermind", in 1991. The band remains one of the most iconic groups in the history of alternative rock, despite its short career. They disbanded in 1994, after Cobain's death.

This is a live album, recorded in November 1993, and released a year later, about seven months after Cobain's death. I'm usually not a big fan of live albums, but this one is a rare exception. It is missing a few songs I wish it would have, especially the one I (and probably most people) most associate with the band, "Smells Like Teen Spirit", but it's still really good for what it does include. I'm reviewing it in 2024.

1. "About a Girl" (Originally released on their first album, "Bleach") The live version was released as a single. I'm not even sure if I've ever heard the studio version, but I may have. This version is really good, anyway.

2. "Come As You Are" (Originally released on "Nevermind") This is one of the songs I know the band best for. I also really liked a cover by Yuna, from 2011.

3. "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" (Cover of the Vaselines' "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam") I'm not familiar with the original, but this is good.

4. "The Man Who Sold the World" (Cover of a David Bowie song) I don't think I'm familiar with the original, but I really should look for it. Meanwhile, this cover is pretty good.

5. "Pennyroyal Tea" (Originally released on their third album, "In Utero") I didn't remember this one, but of course it's good. Not something I'm likely to remember after listening to the album, unless I listen to it often (which I'm not likely to do).

6. "Dumb" (In Utero) I didn't expect to remember this, but I guess it sounds vaguely familiar. It's not one of my favorite Nirvana songs by a long shot, but it's not bad, I guess.

7. "Polly" (Nevermind) This song is dark, more so if you know what it's about (which I only know from reading Wikipedia's page about it). Definitely not something I want to listen to often.

8. "On a Plain" (Nevermind) Another song I don't remember, and don't particularly care about, but it's not bad.

9. "Something in the Way" (Nevermind) Another one I don't really remember, and also kind of dark. But it's fairly good.

10. "Plateau" (Cover of a Meat Puppets song) I'm not familiar with Meat Puppets at all, and I don't remember this song at all, but I like it.

11. "Oh Me" (Meat Puppets) Another song I don't remember, but I like it.

12. "Lake of Fire" (Meat Puppets) Yet another song I don't remember, and the theme is kinda dark, but it's not bad. I kind of feel like it's giving '60s vibes.

13. "All Apologies" (In Utero) This might be my second favorite Nirvana song. No, scratch that, it might be my favorite. It's just not quite as iconic as "Teen Spirit". It's dark, but very memorable and awesome.

14. "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" (Cover of traditional song "In the Pines") I'm not familiar with any other version of this song, and I don't remember this one, either. But it's good. Heavy.

Well, I'd say every song on this album is a gem, but not all of them are equally valuable to me. I like it mostly for the few songs I always remember, but I feel like if I was in the habit of listening to albums repeatedly, any of the songs could become familiar.
