Hip-Hop Docktrine: The Official Boondocks Mixtape
Bandcamp; Boondocks Wiki; Discogs
This is the first soundtrack for the animated series The Boondocks, though it includes songs that weren't used in the show. It was released in 2006, and was followed by two more mixtapes, in 2007 and 2010, but I only have the first one. It's hosted by Asheru, who did the theme song for the series. Before I listened to the album again in 2024 to review it, I had the idea in mind that I had downloaded it and burned it to disc, but looking at it now it's obvious I didn't do that, because both the disc and the sleeve are professionally made. I don't recall now where I bought it, but I think at least it was probably online. Maybe from Adult Swim's website, but if so, it's not available there anymore. You can, however, download a digital album from Bandcamp.

Well, I don't really have anything specific to say about any individual tracks, except that the last one is the closing theme music from The Boondocks, but Asheru speaks over it, which I think is a bit of a shame. I'd like to have a copy of that music just by itself. (I actually had it as a ringtone for awhile.) Anyway, that's just the nature of mixtapes (even though this is a CD). There's no break between tracks, they bleed into each other. Sometimes people talk over the music, or there's audio clips from the show. I personally prefer listening to music that is just the music, but the mixtape style is cool in its own way. And all the tracks on the album are pretty good, though hip-hop isn't my favorite genre. So I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who would appreciate this album more than I do. But I definitely do like it.
