So, there are these best friends named Mandy Yang (Peyton Elizabeth Lee) and Ben Plunkett (Milo Manheim), who don't socialize with most of the other kids at school, whom they refer to as "Everests" (because they presumably peaked in high school). Although Mandy and Ben do have a couple of other friends, Charles and Zenobia (Arica Himmel), but they're not terribly important to the plot. There are lots of elaborate promposals going on among the Everests, which Mandy finds annoying. She's stressing out about whether or not she'll get accepted into Harvard. But Ben is starting to worry that they've been missing out on the whole high school experience, by not going to parties or anything. So Mandy cheers him up by making a pact to go to prom with him. He's got a major crush on a popular girl named LaToya Reynolds, but feels it's impossible she could ever be interested in him. When Mandy gets waitlisted for Harvard, she decides to get close to a popular guy named Graham Lansing by becoming his tutor. This is really a way to get close to his father, a senator who is a Harvard alum, in the hopes that he'll write her a letter of recommendation. But over the course of the movie, as Mandy gets to know Graham better, she falls for him, and decides she doesn't want to use him like that, after all. Meanwhile, Ben unexpectedly starts getting close to LaToya. I should also say that Mandy occasionally seeks advice from the school counselor, Ms. Chen (Margaret Cho).
Well, there are predictable ups and downs for both Mandy and Ben. I don't want to spoil any details, but while I found the plot fairly formulaic, I thought it was well executed. I hope I'm not forgetting anything important. But I definitely found the film more enjoyable than I expected to.
