This show was hosted by brothers Tom and Dick Smothers, who were a fairly famous comedy duo in the 60s. They had a show with the same name as this one from 67-69, but of course that was before my time. The show I watched aired in 1988-89. (I also remember listening to some of my dad's comedy records of them when I was a kid, but I don't remember if that was before or after I saw this show.) Anyway, this is probably the only show I've had a chance to see that truly qualifies as a "variety show." I guess Saturday Night Live and MADtv kind of qualify, because they had musical guests, but I still think of them mainly as sketch comedy shows. True variety shows were more of a thing from the 50s and 60s, maybe the 70s. All before my time. Though I have seen a couple of Ed Sullivan Show retrospectives. But basically, this one brief series from the late 80s is my only real experience with the format. Sketch comedy, banter between the hosts, musical guests, and any number of other kinds of acts. I don't know what else to say except that I really liked Tom and Dick, as well as many of their guest performers. It was a great show. I wish it had lasted longer, and I'd love to see it again someday.
