Young Love, on Max

This is a 12 episode series from 2023 based on the 2019 short film Hair Love. It takes place shortly after that film, and follows the lives of a family including Stephen Love (voiced by Scott Mescudi), his girlfriend Angela Young (Issa Rae), their 6-year-old daughter Zuri Young Love, and Angela's parents, Russell and Gigi Young (Harry Lennix and Loretta Devine), who own the apartment building where they live (and Russell is always worried about whether his daughter and Stephen will be able to pay rent). Angela is a hair stylist, who recently beat cancer, while Stephen is a struggling freelance music producer. He has an manager or coworker or something named Star. We also occasionally see Stephen's nephew, Amir. At the start of the series, Stephen begins working for a famous rapper called Lil Ankh, who causes him a great deal of stress. And throughout the series, Zuri engages in all sorts of diverse, often chaotic endeavors. And all the characters deal with various issues, involving jobs, family, life in general, and... I dunno, all sorts of things.
Well, I'm afraid I don't like the show nearly as much as I liked (loved) the short film it's based on. I do think it's reasonably amusing, heartfelt, wholesome, and whatnot. I like the main characters well enough, and their relationships to each other. And I like the themes explored in each episode. There's really nothing I don't like about the series, but even so, I couldn't help but find it all a little bit underwhelming, as sitcoms go. There are plenty of little moments that I like more than I like the show overall. So I'm not sure why I don't like it more than I do. I guess maybe I just don't find the humor quite as funny as it could be. It's probably a bit more complicated than that, though. Whatever, I'm glad I watched it. It really is a cute, and occasionally quirky show.
