A man and woman go camping, rather unbelievably, when the woman is not long from going into labor. They get attacked by a bird-like monster, who kills the man. The story then flashes forward 9 years, and the woman and her son have been captives all that time. Inexplicably, the boy thinks of the monster as his mother, and seems rather indifferent toward his actual mother. (He doesn't even speak, he just makes the kinds of screeches the creature makes.) And yet, the mother remains determined to escape and take her son with her. I won't say how it ends, but none of this makes any sense to me. Still, it was rather interesting, and I'd actually like to see what happens next. So I hope this isn't the end of the story. (I expect if there is ever more to it, I'll raise my rating.)
