Troop Zero (PG), on Amazon

This is set in 1977, in Georgia. There's a 12-year-old girl named Christmas Flint (Mckenna Grace), whose mother is deceased, and whose father Ramsey (Jim Gaffigan) is a lawyer who I guess always loses his cases, and whose clients take forever to pay him. So he can't afford much, including paying his assistant, Rayleen (Viola Davis). Anyway, Christmas is very interested in space, so when she hears that one troop of Birdie Scouts will get to be recorded on the gold record going into space in the Voyager probe, she decides to become a Birdie Scout herself. But the local girls are all mean to her and won't let her join, so she starts her own troop of misfits called Troop Zero, with Rayleen as troop mother. The other local troop is led by Miss Massey (Allison Janney). First, all the girls (and one boy) in Troop Zero need to earn badges, so they can compete in the Jamboree talent show against a bunch of other troops, including Miss Massey's.
There's not much else to say about the plot. I don't want to reveal whether Troop Zero wins the talent show and the chance to be on the gold record, but I will at least say there's a happy ending. (And I did like their performance.) Anyway, most of the movie I thought was just sort of okay, but some parts I enjoyed a bit more. So overall, I'm glad to have watched it.
