Season one * two * three

tek's rating:
(Rating for the season collectively; some films I may like more or less than others.)

Bite Size Halloween, on Hulu
IMDb; Short of the Week

Season three (2022)

Nian (6:39)
IMDb; Michelle Krusiec; YouTube
A Chinese-American girl gives a presentation in class about a Chinese demon mask for warding off evil spirits like the nian, who eats bad children. A racist white girl bullies her, and later gets a comeuppance from the Nian. I mostly thought the short was decent, though I found the final line of dialogue too silly.

Ticks (9:46)
IMDb; Sam Max
A woman has apparently been beaten up in the woods after breaking up with her partner, and then goes walking away. She encounters another woman who shares some food with her. And then things get more sexual. And then things get sort of vampiric. It's kind of weird and I'm not sure how I feel about it.

Snatched (10:38)
IMDb; Michael Schwawrtz; YouTube
One night, a teenage boy comes out to his parents as gay, and they seem... less than enthused. The next morning, however, they are over-the-top supportive, but act very strangely in a number of ways, which frightens their son. Honestly, I don't know what to think of this short. It seems like people all over town are being replaced, like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", but they're all, like, woke now. To a creepy, potentially dangerous degree. It almost makes me feel like the film is suggesting wokeness is a bad thing, which of course it isn't. (And I don't think that's the intention of the film.) So, I'm just confused by the whole thing. Oh yeah, and the boy's mom is played by Tatiana Maslany.

Nzu (8:33)
Conscian Morgan; IMDb
A white man named Hamish goes with his Black girlfriend, Renna, to seek her the blessing of her father, Dr. Oba, to marry her. But he never even gets around to asking about that, when Renna's family engage in a ceremony (called "nzu") that lets Hamish look into his ancestral past, which is quite disturbing. It's definitely an interesting short film, and I felt like it could be more interesting as a longer film.

Bug (8:24)
IMDb
A woman is driving her daughter, Bug, somewhere to stay for awhile, and the girl isn't happy about it. At one point she runs off into the woods, and her mother has to search for her. I found the whole thing kind of boring.

Incomplete (10:55)
IMDb; Zoey Martinson
A man is under house arrest and periodically has to take an automated breathalyzer test. Unfortunately, the machine starts acting strangely. And I don't want to reveal any more, but the short film gets freaky.

Remote (10:52)
IMDb
This is just weird. A man leaves his teenage son and daughter to look after their pawn shop while he goes to get pizza. The son finds a weird thing from space, while the daughter encounters a pair of weird robbers. She has a weird gun, and then the weird thing from space helps eliminate the robbers. I can't describe it any better than that. It's all just weird and more sci-fi than horror. But there's definitely a horror aspect to it.

Live Bait (2:41)
Andrew Laurich; IMDb
A man is out fishing, and gets fished. I saw this in 2017 as part of Bite Size Horror.

Foreigners Only (15:22)
IMDb
A Bangladeshi man named Hasan is trying to find an apartment to rent, but the landlords all want only foreign (presumably white) tenants. When a pharmacist lets a white man cut in line, that pushes Hasan over the edge. I don't want to spoil what he does, but the short has a very darkly comedic ending. And the whole thing is apparently a pretty accurate representation of racism in Bangladesh.

Mr. Crocket (6:19)
IMDb
A woman gets fed up with her son, Major, constantly watching a videotape of a children's show host called Mr. Crocket. And... I don't want to spoil anything about what happens. It's just weird. Note: This was made into a full-length movie in 2024.

Angels (7:31)
IMDb; Samantha Aldana
A woman who is caring for her dying mother discovers a fallen... being... out in a field, and finds that it can heal with a touch, so she brings it home to help her mother. I'm not sure what to think about this one.

Disposal (9:22)
IMDb; Luka Wilson
I don't know what to say about this one.

The Heritage (12:04)
Andrew Rutter; IMDb
A man named Dylan goes to meet his biological father, Albert, whom he never knew. He wants to ask about his mother, who apparently committed suicide. Albert turns out to be a physical monstrosity, with just as disgusting a personality. The whole short is quite disturbing, and that's all I want to say.

Fracture (8:33)
IMDb
A man named Markus is either stranded and alone and injured on a planet called Terra 2-B sometime in the future, or he's in a hospital on Earth in the present. He's hallucinating one place or the other, and it isn't clear which. It's not exactly a horror story, but it does seem scary not knowing what your own reality is, and both possible realities seem problematic.

Bad Rabbit (7:52)
IMDb
An elderly woman intentionally causes her daughter to run over a pet rabbit with a lawn mower, and we soon find that the mother is horrible in all sorts of ways. Then her daughter starts seeing a humanoid rabbit woman, who is a bad influence on her. And that's all I want to say. The whole thing is just weird.

Sleep Study (10:31)
IMDb; Natalie Metzger
A new mother has nightmares in which she is attacked by a phantasm. She eventually fights back, with tragic results.

Go To Bed, Raymond (7:03)
IMDb; Nikki Taylor Roberts
A young boy named Raymond wakes his father up to say there's someone in his room. The dad checks it out but doesn't find anyone. The kid keeps getting his father up to check on things, and eventually... I don't want to say what happens. But it's fairly spooky.

The Kapre (6:57)
Carlo Ledesma; IMDb
An American couple are camping in the woods in the Philippines. I guess the woman is of Filipino descent, because she knows some of the country's mythology, including about the kapre, a tree giant than attacks them for intruding upon its lair, or whatever. The short film is kind of a comedy.

Alone with Him (4:53)
IMDb
A pregnant woman has been in a car crash in the woods during a snowstorm, and can barely move. She's haunted by visions of a man who is apparently the father of her unborn child, and he's obviously a bad guy. (He reminds me of Gollum.) I don't know what else to say.

Trespassers (6:22)
IMDb; Robin Takao D'Oench
A couple of thieves break into a home and... it doesn't go well for them.

Ride or Die (7:23)
IMDb
Three teenage friends are on a road trip at night, and stop when they see a deserted car. Suddenly a man who is infected with something jumps into their car and tells them to drive. He freaks out about what had happened to him, and... I don't know what else to say.
